Nuclear power unit at North Anna plant trips offline

Unit 2 at the North Anna nuclear power plant in Virginia manually tripped offline due to the loss of a main feedwater pump.

The “A” main feedwater pump tripped Feb. 2 and the “C” feedwater pump automatically started, but workers with Dominion (NYSE: D) were concerned that both motors of the “C” feedwater pump had not started because a running indicator light did not illuminate and shut down the reactor. Both motors were, in fact, running.

After the trip, the auxiliary feedwater pumps automatically started as designed and provided makeup flow to the steam generators. Unit 1 continued to operate at full power.
