NRC to delay publishing of nuclear waste confidence rule

NRC Approves Changes to Reactor Oversight Process

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it is delaying publication of an extended nuclear waste storage rule by a month.

The new deadline to publish the waste confidence generic environmental impact statement (GEIS) in the Federal Register is now Oct. 3, up from September. The delay is due to time lost during the two-week government shutdown and lapse of appropriations in October 2013. The shutdown led the NRC to reschedule meetings and extend the public comment period by nearly a month.

The GEIS describes the environmental impacts of storing spent nuclear fuel for an extended period of time after a nuclear reactor ceases operation.
