Nuclear waste repository not receiving additional fed. funds

A $1.1 trillion federal spending bill does not include any money allotted to review and develop a nuclear spent fuel repository site.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, the bill did not set aside any money for either the U.S. Department of Energy or the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to complete the licensing process or rule on the issue.

The article quoted an official as saying the DOE has between $17 million and $30 million to pursue the application, though the DOE says it will need $100 million to continue. The NRC reportedly has between $13 million to $17 million to conduct hearings and consider the licensing, but the process could cost $1.6 billion, the article said.
