EPA’s carbon capture and sequestration rule open for public comment

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published the final version of carbon capture and storage regulations to the Federal Register on Jan. 2.

The rule clarifies that the EPA will exclude some carbon dioxide (CO2) streams from being classified as hazardous waste, that the captured CO2 be transported through pipelines in compliance with applicable Department of Transportation guidelines, and issued draft guidance on transitioning wells used to inject CO2 for oil- and gas development.

The public has 75 days to comment on the guidance before it is finalized on March 4. To read the full guidance, click here.
