Cooper nuclear plant to use AREVA dry shielded canisters

AREVA TN was awarded a $12 million contract to supply dry shielded canisters to store used nuclear fuel.

The contract was signed with the Nebraska Public Power District for the Cooper Nuclear Power Plant. AREVA TN is currently building a horizontal storage module that will store the NUHOMS storage canisters at the Cooper plant’s Independent Spent Fuel Storage Facility.

The AREVA TN NUHOMS 61BTH canisters are designed to handle high heat loads and safely store up to 61 used fuel assemblies from a boiling water reactor. The canisters are scheduled to be delivered before the end of 2015.
