US Nuclear Regulatory Commission NRC issues Final Environmental Impact Statement Watts Bar nuclear Unit 2

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) extended the expiration date of the construction permit for the Watts Bar 2 unit in Tennessee to Sept. 30, 2016. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) requested the extension in May 2012.

TVA told the NRC that it plans to complete Unit 2 and request an operating license in 2014. Unit 2 will use a Westinghouse 1,100 MW pressurized water reactor. The project is expected to cost between $4 billion and $4.5 billion.
