NRC orders staff to finish environmental report on Yucca Mountain

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has directed its staff to complete work on the safety evaluation report for the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.

The NRC also requested the Department of Energy to prepare a supplemental environmental impact statement requested by staff in order to complete the environmental review. NRC did not direct staff to reconstitute the Licensing Support Network that supported the adjudicatory hearing on the application, but directed staff to load documents into the LSN collection into the NRC’s non-public ADAMS online database. The order acknowledges that all documents will be publicly released, but there must be enough funds to do so.

Today’s order is in response to a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in August ordering the NRC to continue its review of the Yucca Mountain application at least until existing funds are used. As of Sept. 30, the NRC had $11 million in funds appropriated for the review.
