ABB: Center of Competence for steam and gas turbines

ABB Ulrich Spiesshofer CEO Joe Hogan

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced that it has established a new Turbine Automation Center of Competence (CoC) for steam and gas turbine applications for the North American and Asian markets. This Center of Competence will be located in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh.

With the relevance of steam and gas turbines continuing to grow in all power and industrial sectors, ABB’s Power Generation business can provide specialized expertise using ABB’s popular Symphony Plus (S+) control system’s advanced solutions, designed to meet the needs of both retrofit and greenfield markets.  S+ Turbine is a highly integrated “total solution” for the automation of all turbine types, sizes and manufacturers. The CoC will focus on the development of products specific to the area of turbine automation, including I/O modules for turbine protection, valve positioning, auto synchronization and condition monitoring.

ABB responded to the power industry’s many challenges with Symphony Plus customized solutions to evolve existing assets in a cost-effective and low risk manner to improve plant safety, reliability and performance.

“For several decades, ABB has been one of the world’s leading providers of turbine control systems, delivering cost efficient and technologically advanced solutions. We are pleased to introduce this new Turbine Automation Center of Competence,” said Ed Klaphake, operations manager, ABB Power Generation, Turbine Automation, North America, and responsible for the CoC. “With Symphony Plus, our years of experience come together under ABB’s ‘evolution without obsolescence’ strategy; allowing our open architecture to seamlessly integrate into the overall plant, in both power generation and water industries.”

A complementary Center of Competence for Steam and Gas Turbines has been established in Genova, Italy, and will take care of the EMEA region (northern and central Europe, Mediterranean region, India and the Middle East). The two centers together will grant a worldwide coverage thanks to best-in-class experts in the field which will provide every customer with the best solution for their project.

ABB’s Symphony Plus family is a proven automation control system, ensuring that each new generation enhances its predecessors in accordance with its industry-unique life cycle policy of “evolution without obsolescence.” ABB’s extensive turbine island portfolio delivers all the components for new and retrofit turbine projects: high performance DCS, hydraulic components and system design, condition monitoring, instrumentation, excitation systems, generator circuit breakers, turbine/generator protection systems and generator current transformers. This highly integrated solution provides a common system for governor control, sequencing logic, generator synchronization, turbine generator auxiliaries and protection.

This announcement was made at the Power-Gen International 2013 exhibition and conference. More information can be found in ABB’s booth #1101 at the Orange County Convention Center.
