Kansas regulators approve portion of wind power transmission line

The Kansas Corporation Commission has approved the 370-mile Kansas Portion of the 750-mile Grain Belt Express Clean Line, a transmission line designed wind power from western Kansas to Missouri, Illinois and Indiana as well as other states farther east.

The $2 billion project is being developed by Grain Belt Express Clean Line LLC. The line will begin near Dodge City, Kan. and travel north and east to the Kansas-Missouri border.

The commission’s approval is conditional on the company receiving approval from Missouri, Illinois and Indiana regulators before beginning construction in Kansas. Grain Belt Express Clean Line stated the project is expected to take several years to permit and could begin commercial operation as early as 2018.
