We Energies can’t close coal-fired power plant yet

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) denied Wisconsin Energy Corp.’s request to close the 407 MW Presque Isle coal-fired power plant in Michigan, according to Reuters.

MISO said that the plant must continue running to maintain reliability of the power system on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the article said. A We Energies spokesman said in the article that the utility is in discussions with MISO to compensate the company to keep the plant open.

The plant’s largest customer, Cliffs Natural Resources, will switch to purchasing electricity from Integrys Energy Services out of Chicago. That led to the decision to shut down Presque Isle.
