Unit 3 at the coal 2,222-MW coal-fired Sherburne County Generating Station is expected to return to service Oct. 7, a spokesperson for Xcel Energy told Reuters Tuesday.
The company had originally planned for the 860-MW unit, called Sherco 3, to return to service before Sept. 30. The spokesperson told Reuters Tuesday that Sherco 3 was synchronized to the grid on Sept. 4 then taken offline Sept. 7 to address some post-restoration issues.
The unit shut in November 2011 because of extensive turbine damage. Xcel has stated that burning coal remains the most economical option at the 2,400 MW power plant until there is a greater cost for emitting carbon.
