Emera purchases three natural gas-fired power plants in New England

Emera Inc. has entered an agreement to purchase three combined cycle natural gas-fired power plants from Capital Power Corp. The three facilities, all in New England, total 1,050 MW and will cost $541 million, according to Emera.

The three plants are the 520 MW Bridgeport Energy plant in Bridgeport, Conn.; the 265 MW Tiverton Power plant in Tiverton, R.I.; and the 265 MW Rumford Power plant in Rumford, Maine.

Emera President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Huskilson said adding gas generation to the company’s existing portfolio of wind power and hydropower assets has been a strategic objective for the company. He added Emera expects the value of the facilities to increase over time as older generating facilities in the region are retired and more intermittent renewable power generation is added to the system.
