Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) submitted a request to purchase an additional 1,500 MW of wind, a 30 percent increase in overall wind capacity.
Xcel is seeking approval of three 200 MW projects in Minnesota and North Dakota; three projects in New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, totaling almost 700 MW of generating capacity; and a 200 MW project in Colorado. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission will decide this fall whether to approve another 350 MW of wind.
If approved by regulators, construction on the projects will begin immediately in order to qualify for the Production Tax Credit. All projects are expected to begin operations in 2016.
