SDG&E discussing new power plant on Navy’s Camp Pendleton

San Diego Gas & Electric has started discussing the possibility of building a new power plant on a portion of Camp Pendleton with the U.S. Navy, according to a report from U-T San Diego.

According to the report, SDG&E told state officials a new power facility on the training grounds used by the U.S. Marines could provide up to 1,000 MW of power capacity, which could help replace lost power from retiring the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

SDG&E said the talks were in “very preliminary” stages, according to U-T San Diego, and the utility is looking at options across San Diego County that would allow it to meet the demands for electricity over the next decade.
