Wind turbine helping power microgrid system in Hawaii

A wind turbine is helping to power a microgrid system for a rural community on the main island of Hawaii.

The Northern Power NPS 100 wind turbine generates electricity for the community and also powers an off-grid water-pumping system. The microgrid system, known as SkyGrid Energy, has been operational since April 2013 and includes a battery bank and solar panels.

The NPS 100 wind turbine is designed to support microgrids with voltage controls and no inrush current, relieving stress to the system. The project was partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Hawaii Renewable Energy Development Venture. Project developer Gen-X Energy Development LLC said it plans to duplicate the microgrid throughout Hawaii and other island communities.
