Wind energy project in N. Dakota dedicated

Minnesota Power Allete Inc Siemens wind turbine Bison Wind Energy Center North Dakota Production Tax Credit

Minnesota Power, a subsidiary of Allete Inc. (NYSE: ALE), dedicated the 292 MW Bison Wind Energy Center in North Dakota. The project cost a total of $500 million.

The project uses 101 Siemens (NYSE: SI) turbines connected to a 465-mile direct current transmission line that Minnesota Power purchased in 2009. The first phase broke ground in 2010 with a total of 33 Siemens 2.3 MW turbines constructed at the site. The first 16 turbines were operational by December 2010 and the rest were operational about a year later. The utility then accelerated the project by building 70, 3 MW Siemens turbines because of the threat of the Production Tax Credit expiring.
