Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) announced Thursday it has closed a $12 million investment in the Jasper Power Project, a 96 MW solar photovoltaic plant in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The project will be one of the largest solar installations on the continent once completed, Google Director of Energy and Sustainability Rick Needham posted on a blog.
The project is being developed and funded by SolarReserve, Intikon Energy and the Kensani Group.
The company has invested more than $1 billion in renewable energy developments and is continuing to search for new opportunities, focusing on projects that “make financial sense” and “will bolster the growth of the renewable energy industry and move the world to a clean energy future,” Needham wrote.
