Solar power research in Nevada to receive $20mn boost

The National Science Foundation is awarding a $20 million grant to Nevada’s higher education system to help fund research on solar power, according to a report from the Associated Press. The grant will be used to help find ways to make large-scale solar power projects more efficient on arid desert lands.

The program, called “The Solar Energy-Water-Environment Nexus in Nevada,” is aimed at creating competitive research increase the efficiency of solar panels while minimizing water use and environmental impact, according to the Associated Press.

The collaborative effort for the project includes the University of Nevada-Reno; the University of Nevada-Las Vegas; and the Desert Research Institute, the Associated Press reported. The grant is expected to fund employment for at least 100 technicians, students and faculty members for five years.
