Xcel Energy fills solar power rebate program, wants program capacity increase

Wisconsin third-party financing solar power

Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) has filled the capacity of its Solar*Rewards program, which provides rebates to customers installing small-sized solar installations on their homes or business, and plans to request an increase in the program capacity for 2013.

Xcel, the Solar Energy Industries Association and the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association are currently working on details for the proposal and, when finished, will file it for expedited approval with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

Under the plan originally approved by the CPUC in 2012, 9.6 MW of generating capacity were available to Xcel Energy residential customers in Colorado in each of 2012 and 2013 for systems of up to 10 KW each, according to Xcel. That allowed for solar installations on around 2,000 homes. Unless the CPUC approves a capacity expansion for the program, rebates for future installation would be suspended in the state until a new compliance plan is approved for 2014 and beyond.
