Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) is the leading utility provider of wind energy in the U.S. for the ninth consecutive year, according to a report from the American Wind Energy Association.

The company had nearly 4,900 MW of wind power capacity on its system at the end of 2012, more than 600 MW more than the next leading utility, according to a release from the company. Wind power represents about 12 percent of the energy Xcel supplies to its customers.

According to Xcel President, CEO and Chairman Ben Fowke, the company’s commitment to wind power helps protect its customers from “the risk of rising fuel costs and the cost of future power plant environmental regulations.”
