Utilities planning to add transmission lines for Iowa wind power

FERC approves Entergy ITC Holdings transmission business merger

MidAmerican Energy and ITC Holdings have plans to build more than 400 miles of transmission lines in Iowa and Minnesota by 2017 to accommodate the state’s growing wind power generation, according to a report from the Des Moines Register.

The two companies will hold public meetings this summer to discuss the new lines, which would help put more wind power on the state’s grid, according to the report. With Iowa’s current transmission capacity, wind power produced in the state often can’t be used because of transmission congestion.

Around 25 percent of Iowa’s power capacity is produced by wind power, according to the Register.

The report states the project would be built in stages beginning next year and finishing in 2017.
