Tennessee Valley Authority installing $1bn in emissions controls at coal-fired power plant

The Tennessee Valley Authority announced it is moving forward with a $1 billion project to install additional environmental controls at the Gallatin Fossil Plant in Gallatin, Tenn.

The project will include installation of new flue gas desulfurization systems that will reduce SO2 emissions by 95 percent. The project also includes selective catalytic reduction equipment that will reduce nitrous oxide emissions by more than 90 percent.

The company, which has spent more than $5.4 billion to create emission reductions across its systems, said the Gallatin project reflects the company’s need for a balanced generation portfolio that uses a mixture of coal, nuclear, natural gas, hydro and other renewable generation.
