Ontario’s Darlington nuclear plant refurbishment gets green light

Ontario Power Generation won approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission last week for plans to refurbish and extend the operating life of the Darlington nuclear plant.

The project will involve refurbishing all four nuclear reactors at the Darlington plant, adding 25 to 30 years to their lifespans. The tune-ups will include replacing a number of major components while the reactors are offline. Once switched back on, Darlington will provide 3,500 MW of electricity to Ontario, according to an OPG press release. The scheme will be one of the largest capital infrastructure projects in Canada.
