NRG Energy to bring 2,000 MW of natural gas, 590 MW of solar online in 2013

NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) plans to bring more than 2,000 MW of natural gas generation and more than 590 MW of solar power generation online in 2013 through seven separate projects.

The company said in its fourth quarter results and 2013 guidance that it is currently working on the remaining 123 MW at the California Valley Solar Ranch project that is expected to be completed by the end of 2013. The first 127 MW began operations on December 31, 2012.

The 124 MW Unit 1 of the Ivanpah solar project in California is scheduled to begin operations in August 2013, with the other two 127 MW each units expected to be completed in 3Q and 4Q 2013. The company also said that the 26 MW Borrego and the 66 MW Alpine projects are scheduled to begin commercial operations in 1Q 2013.

NRG also said construction at the Agua Caliente solar project is several months ahead of schedule and is expected to reach completion in early 2014. As of December 31, 2012, 253 MW of capacity at Agua Caliente was brought online.

The natural gas-fired power plants include the 720 MW Marsh Landing peaking natural gas-fired power plant in California, which expects to achieve commercial operation in 2Q 2013, and construction on the 550 MW El Segundo combined-cycle power plant, also in California, is scheduled for completion by 3Q 2013.

NRG is continuing development of a 75 MW peaking unit at its W.A. Parish Generating Station in Texas and signed a $24 million turnkey engineering, procurement and construction contract with Petra Nova. Petra Nova said it expects to finish the project in 2Q 2013.
