MidAmerican Energy considering nuclear power plant

MidAmerican Energy isn’t ready to completely turn to natural gas and is considering the option of nuclear power generation, company President William Fehrman said in a report to the Iowa Utilities Board.

According to the Des Moines Register, Fehrman told the board “the nuclear option is still there” and the company is planning on a diverse power generation mix to avoid putting “too many eggs in one basket.”

MidAmerican agreed to quit burning coal at several of its units as part of a settlement of a 2007 lawsuit filed by the Sierra Club. The coal-burning units will be converted to natural gas-fired units.

Fehman said part of his hesitation to relying too heavily on natural gas is based on the possibility the fuel will not stay at its current low price.
