MidAmerican Energy isnât ready to completely turn to natural gas and is considering the option of nuclear power generation, company President William Fehrman said in a report to the Iowa Utilities Board.
According to the Des Moines Register, Fehrman told the board âthe nuclear option is still thereâ and the company is planning on a diverse power generation mix to avoid putting âtoo many eggs in one basket.â
MidAmerican agreed to quit burning coal at several of its units as part of a settlement of a 2007 lawsuit filed by the Sierra Club. The coal-burning units will be converted to natural gas-fired units.
Fehman said part of his hesitation to relying too heavily on natural gas is based on the possibility the fuel will not stay at its current low price.
