Charles McConnell, assistant secretary for fossil energy at the U.S. Department of Energy, will resign his post on Feb. 1, according to an email sent to department employees.
McConnell had headed the department’s Office of Fossil Energy for nearly two years. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu sent the email to department employees announcing the departure but did not specify McConnell’s reason for leaving.
Chu also announced in the email that Scott Klara will be stepping down as principal deputy assistant secretary in the Office of Fossil Energy and retake his former position as deputy director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oil and Natural Gas Chris Smith will serve as acting assistant secretary for the office.
