Bangladesh to begin work on first nuclear power plant in October

Work on the first nuclear plant in Bangladesh, the 2,000 MW Rooppur nuclear power plant planned for the northwest of the country, is set to begin in October 2013, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Channel News Asia.

The two-reactor plant is set to be built with the assistance of the Russian nuclear firm Rosatom, following a deal signed in November 2011.

Severe power outages are common in Bangladesh, according to the report, as the country has struggled to meet growing energy demands with its dwindling gas reserves.
