Areva wins U.S. spent nuclear fuel monitoring contract

The French company Areva has been selected to provide spent fuel pool monitoring at an unnamed U.S. nuclear power plant through its VEGA Through-Air Radar monitoring system, according to a company press release issued Jan. 14.

The NRC requires that plants have equipment in place to remotely monitor spent fuel pools, including two redundant, independent monitoring channels and an independent power supply. AREVA’s system has been used more than 300,000 times in nuclear, military and industrial applications, and has proved its robustness in the face of natural and other hazards, according to the release.
