NNSA taps CNS to run security at Y-12 nuclear complex

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has contracted Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC (CNS) to manage operations at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn. CNS is comprised of Bechtel National Inc., Lockheed Martin Services (NYSE: LMT), ATK Launch Systems, and SOC LLC.

The four-month transition period between current security contractor Babcock & Wilcox (B&W, NYSE: BWC) and CNS will begin immediately, with the new, five-year contract taking effect as of May 1. A break in at Y-12 over the summer of 2012 raised questions about B&W’s performance, but NNSA said the security breach was not a determining factor, Knoxville’s WATE reports. The NNSA estimates the new arrangement will save $3.27 billion in government funds over the next decade.
