Coal-fired generating units to retire by the end of the year

Santee Cooper announced that four generating units at two coal-fired power plants in South Carolina will retire effective Dec. 31.

The action follows an October decision by the Santee Cooper Board of Directors that authorized the retirement of two units each at the Grainger Generating Station and the Jefferies Generating Station. The decision was made due to changing generation needs and emissions regulations that would require upgrades at the plants. The hydroelectric units at the Jefferies station will not be impacted.

Employees from both plants will be relocated to other positions available through attrition, so no layoffs are anticipated.
