Xcel Energy coal-fired power plant enters regional haze debate

Environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit on Dec. 5 seeking stricter emissions reduction at Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL)’s 2,400 MW Sherco coal-fired power plant in Becker, Minn. The plant is the largest source of electricity generation in Minnesota.

The National Parks Conservation Association and five other groups say the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hasn’t enforced permanent rules under the Clean Air Act to reduce regional haze over the areas in Minnesota surrounding the coal plant, according to The Star Tribune.
