Coal-fired unit repairs in Minnesota could cost $200mn

Repairs on a turbine at the 2,400 MW Sherburne County Generating Station (Sherco) in Minnesota could cost up to $200 million and take a total of 16 months, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL) and Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency had completed an upgrade to the 900 MW Unit 3 in November 2011 and was testing safety mechanisms on the turbine when the turbine suddenly tore apart, sending a cylinder into the control room and damaging internal parts, the article said. Oil and other flammable liquids had leaked from the turbine’s seals, causing a fire. No one was injured in the accident.

The turbine is expected to return to service by the end of the first quarter 2013, 16 months after the accident, the article said.
