Tidal energy project sending electricity to U.S. power grid

Bangor Hydro Electric Co. said that electricity from a tidal energy project in Maine is delivering electricity to the grid.

Ocean Renewable Power Co. (ORPC)’s Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project is the first ocean energy project to deliver electricity to the grid in the U.S.

In early 2012, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued a pilot project license to ORPC for the Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project. In April, the Maine Public Utilities Commission approved the basic terms of 20-year power purchase agreements with Central Maine Power Co., Bangor Hydro Electric and Maine Public Service Co. for ORPC’s Maine Tidal Energy Project, which includes the Cobscook Bay Project.
