Wood Group selected to build gas-fired power plant in Texas

Wood Group GTS on Sept. 13 said it has secured a $24 million contract with Petra Nova, an NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG) subsidiary, to design and construct a 75 MW gas turbine peaking facility at the 3,665 MW W. A. Parish Generating Station, about 25 miles southwest of Houston.

The project scope involves installation of the plant on a turnkey basis, including a GE (NYSE: GE) Frame 7EA gas turbine supplied by Petra Nova and all associated balance of plant equipment furnished by Wood Group GTS. Wood Group GTS will also perform an inspection and all required maintenance on the gas turbine as part of the overall project.

Work will commence immediately, with the unit expected to be complete by the summer of 2013.

At a later date, the peaking unit is expected to be converted by NRG for use in the planned commercial scale W. A. Parish post-combustion carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration project which is part of the Energy Department’s Clean Coal Power Initiative. NRG Energy was selected by the Department of Energy to receive up to $167 million to develop the commercial-scale post-combustion carbon capture project.
