SunEdison will design, finance, build, operate and maintain the project on 170 acres of base property. Construction will begin soon and is expected to be finished by December 2012. The base signed a 25-year power purchase agreement for the output from the plant and Tucson Electric Power will receive the renewable energy credits.
The Air Force currently operates 131 solar, wind, waste-to-energy and landfill gas projects, and has plans to build 30 new projects by the end of 2013, including a 6 MW solar array at Otis Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts and a 10 MW solar project at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey.
