Unit 1 of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant near Dothan, Ala. was safely returned to operations July 31 after post-maintenance testing on a diesel generator.
Unit 1 was taken offline in the early morning hours of July 27 in accordance with nuclear processes and procedures, while employees completed repairs on the 1B diesel generator. During routine maintenance activities for the diesel generator, Alabama Power workers found that it did not perform as expected. While investigating the issue, workers learned that an engine cooling valve did not function correctly.
Unit 2 continued to produce power during the shut down.
