Texas biomass power plant enters operations

Southern Co. (NYSE:SO) brought the 100 MW Nacogdoches biomass power plant in Texas online on July 18.

The plant will use a bubbling fludized-bed boiler that will give plant operator Southern Power the flexibility to use a range of biomass fuels. The plant will primarily use non-merchantable wood waste, which is a combination of wood-based biomass fuels consisting of saw mill or other wood mill waste, forest waste, pre-commercial thinnings of cultivated trees and diseased and other non-commercial tree species.

Southern Power purchased the plant from American Renewables LLC in October 2009 and construction began the following month.

Austin Energy will receive the output from the plant under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
