Coal-fired power plant granted new approval

The Mississippi Public Service Commission gave new approval on April 24 for Mississippi Power to continue construction on the 582 MW Kemper County integrated gasification combined-cycle power plant.

According to WLOX-TV, the commission voted 2-1 to approve the plant. The PSC had to vote again on the plant after the state Supreme Court ruled March 15 that regulators did not fully explain why they had to raise a cost cap from $2.4 billion to $2.88 billion, the report said.

Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Co. (NYSE: SO), said it expects to have the plant completed by 2014.
