Vote expected for planned nuclear power plant project

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said it will vote on March 30 on the submitted application for a combined construction and operating license (COL) for two new 1,154 MWe Westinghouse AP1000 pressurized water reactors in South Carolina.

South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. (SCE&G) and South Carolina Public Service Authority, or Santee Cooper, plan to build two new reactors at the existing single-unit, 1,100 MW V.C. Summer plant in Fairfield County, S.C. SCE&G and Santee Cooper submitted paperwork for Units 2 and3 in March 2008.

If approved, the V.C. Summer expansion will become only the second nuclear plant construction license approved since 1978. On Feb. 9, 2012, the NRC voted 4-1 to give the Southern Co. (NYSE: SO)-led consortium a COL for two new AP1000 reactors at Plant Vogtle, about 26 miles south of Augusta, Ga.
