Wind energy project in Hawaii breaks ground

First Wind began construction on the 69 MW Kawailoa Wind project in Hawaii, expected to be one of the biggest wind projects in Hawaii.

The project will use 30, 2.3 MW Siemens (NYSE: SI) wind turbines. The Hawaiian Electric Co. signed a power purchase agreement for the output from the plant in December 2011.

First Wind owns and operates two other wind projects in Hawaii, including the 30 MW Kahuku Wind project on Oahu that went online in March 2011, and is currently building two projects on Maui.
