Solar power project planned for U.S. naval base

SunPower Corp. (Nasdaq: SPWRA, SPWRB) is in the design phase of a 13.78 MW direct current (DC) solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California.

SunPower will design, build, operate and maintain the system that will use the company’s Oasis Power Plant, an integrated modular solar power block that is engineered to rapidly deploy utility-scale solar projects while optimizing land use.

The U.S. Navy is buying the output under a 20-year power purchase agreement. SunPower said it expects to break ground on the plant in December. The plant is one of the first solar projects to be financed by a Federal solar PPA.
