Combined-cycle and solar thermal power plant approved

The California Energy Commission approved plans for the proposed 570 MW Palmdale hybrid power plant in Palmdale, Calif. The hybrid will integrate solar thermal technology in the project’s natural gas-fired steam system.

The project’s combined-cycle, natural gas-fired system will use two natural gas-fired combustion turbine generators, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine generator with arrays of parabolic collectors to heat a fluid to boil water to generate steam.

The city will begin construction after securing a developer and a power purchase deal. Commercial operation could be in 2013.
