The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved a 20-year power purchase agreement for Maui Electric Co. to buy 21 MW of wind power from Sempra Generation’s Auwahi Wind project on the island of Maui.
With the approval, construction on Auwahi Wind is targeted to begin in 2012 and be completed by 2013. Sempra Generation, the owner of Auwahi, signed the PPA in April.
A component of the Auwahi Wind project is a battery storage unit capable of storing up to 12 MWh of electricity generated by the turbines.
