NorthWestern Energy seeks wind energy project purchase

NorthWestern Energy (NYSE:NWE) is asking the Montana Public Service Commission for approval to buy and operate the planned $86.1 million, 40 MW Spion Kop Wind Project in central Montana.

NorthWestern announced its intent to purchase the project in April. If approved by regulators, Compass Wind will develop the wind farm, which will be placed into utility rate-base for NorthWestern’s Montana electric retail customers. If the approval is denied, either party may terminate the agreement.

Construction is set to start upon regulatory approval, and the project is expected to be in service by the end of 2012.
