Nuclear power reactors pass NRC environmental reviwe

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has issued its final supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) for the proposed renewal of the operating licenses for the 551 MWe Unit 1 and the 545 MWe Unit 2 at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant in Minnesota.

Prairie Island has two Westinghouse two-loop pressurized-water reactors. The current operating licenses for units 1 and 2 expire in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Northern States Power Co. submitted an application for the 20-year license extensions in 2008. Both units received their operating licenses in 1974.

This license renewal review process proceeds along two tracks: one for review of safety issues and another for environmental issues.
