Southern backs Obama

Southern Co. said it agrees with President Barack Obama’s call for a safety review of the U.S.’s nuclear power plants in light of the ongoing crisis in Japan, according to the Associated Press.

Obama asking for a review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission after at least three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant suffered at least partial meltdowns. A tsunami and earthquake on March 11 knocked out backup generators used to run the plants’ cooling systems.

Southern Co. operates six nuclear reactors in Georgia and Alabama and has tentative plans to build two more reactors at Plant Vogtle in Georgia.

“We fully support a safety review and learning lessons from the events in Japan,” a company spokeswoman was quoted as saying.
