EKPC coal plant cancelled

East Kentucky Power Co-op said it is dropping plans for the $819 million Smith coal-fired generating plant citing lower demand for electricity and settlements with environmental groups opposed to the plant.

As part of the settlement, the co-op agreed not to build a coal-fired power plant for at least two years, and the environmental groups agreed to drop several lawsuits and regulatory challenges against the plant.

Environmental groups also said they would not oppose a $50 million rate request that EKPC has before the Public Service Commission that was originally to pay for construction of the plant.

The co-op and environmental groups will form a collaborative that will explore how to best implement energy-efficiency programs.
