TransAlta gas plant

TransAlta Corp. said it is planning to build an 800 MW natural gas-fired power plant at its Sundance coal-fired power complex near Edmonton, Alberta. The new plant would be one of the largest gas-fired facilities owned by TransAlta.

The company filed an interconnection application with the Alberta Electric System Operator.

The new plant will replace coal-fired facilities that the Canadian government has ordered phased out to cut the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Company officials said during an investor presentation they expect the government to offer some kind of compensation to coal-fired plant owners and TransAlta would use the money to build the new facility.
