mPower testing facility

27 July 2010– Babcock & Wilcox Co. plans to open a testing facility in Virginia for its modular nuclear reactor known as mPower. It is expected to be operational by 2011.

The B&W mPower Integrated Systems Test facility will include a prototype of the company’s mPower reactor, which will undergo three-year testing of the reactor’s design and safety. It will include technical features of the mPower reactor but will be fueled by electricity instead of nuclear power.

B&W said it plans to use testing results to help in licensing requirements of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
