NGNP design funds

8 March 2010– The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded $40 million to Westinghouse and General Atomics for conceptual design and planning work for the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP). The terms and conditions are still under negotiation and the designs are expected to be complete by August 2010.

The planned NGNP Demonstration Project would be designed to demonstrate high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor technology that would be capable of producing electricity as well as process heat for industrial applications. The process heat or steam generated by the reactors could be used for electricity co-generation.

The project is being conducted in two phases: Phase 1 is research and development, conceptual design and development of licensing requirements. The information collected during Phase 1 will help the DOE determine how to go forward with Phase 2, which would entail detailed design, license review and construction of the demonstration plant.
